Two Weeks in Tuscany DeiMori and the Environment

DeiMori and the Environment

We at DeiMori, both at La Massa in the countryside and in Florence are very keen to ‘do our bit’ to protect the environment and to work to preserve the resources of our precious earth.

In Florence, as far as is practical, all lighting is ‘low energy’, and we ask that you recycle your towels – we are confident that you will agree that the days of tossing hotel towels on to the floor when they have been used just once or twice are well and truly over and being mindful of the damaging effect of bleaches and detergents being tipped into our eco-systems we request that you make your towels ‘do’ for a few days – much as we expect that you do at home.

Similarly, please help us to control the use of fuel for heating and hot water, perhaps putting on a sweater before you turn the heat up, keep your showers to a reasonable length and be sure to turn off all lights and air-conditioning when you leave the room to go out for the day or evening.  Our ac works quickly and efficiently and when you return to your room, a comfortable temperature is quickly achieved.  Guests from North America who may not be familiar with ‘centigrade’ will find that a temperature setting of about 23 degrees should be comfortable.  Anything lower may well be too cool, be damaging to your health and will of course be wasteful of electricity.

At La Massa, we have embarked upon a huge programme of investment to be ‘environmentally friendly’.  As well as initiatives already described above, we have the ability to be self supporting in terms of hot water with our south facing solar energy collectors – these first of all heat the domestic hot water and then, when we have a sufficient reserve, the system switches over to heat the pool.

In 2010, we became self supporting in electricity – we have a 6 kilowatt array of solar cells on the roof.  These produce more than we need during an average day and the surplus is fed into the National supply and in return we receive electricity back at night and on the darkest of days when we cannot produce enough for our needs.

You might be interested to view our current production at La Massa and you can do this  by clicking this link – take the menu option sintesi giornaliera for the daily production, mensile for the monthly and of course annuale for yearly.  Records started at the end of March 2011.  Interestingly, these graphs also give you some idea of the weather we have been enjoying (or not as the case may be).  Certainly on the daily graph you can clearly see where the sun goes behind a cloud.

We ask our guests to  support us by turning off lights when they are not needed and keep showers to a reasonable length.  On the subject of water, at la Massa we have a good spring fed supply and this copes well during the hot dry months.  However, you will appreciate that it is important that we conserve water as far as possible by controlling its use.

We thank guests in advance for their efforts in helping us to achieve our environmental goals.
