Directions to La Massa

Directions from North Italy and Pisa and Bologna Airports to La Massa:

If you have a satellite navigator:       

LAT   N  43  44  27

It is important if using a ‘Sat Nav’ that a couple of kilometres after Consuma, many machines tell you to turn sharp right for Montemignaio and then left for Chiano.  This will lead to La Massa but via a lonely ‘un-made-up’ road – you will tend to wonder where you are.
Is much better to ignore this instruction, keep on the road towards Arezzo and let the Sat Nav re-calculate the route.
If Navigating by traditional methods:

  • Follow Major Road Signs South to Florence (Firenze).
  • If arriving from Motorway at either Firenze Nord or Sud pick up signs for Pontassieve
  • At Pontassieve, keep following the road as you cross over the River Arno and then make a right turn up the hill. direction AREZZO
  • About 200 metres further, take left onto SS70 signed Consuma, Stia, Bibbiena etc and then climb for 20 minutes until you reach the summit atConsuma.
  • The road then descends and continue  Soon, you will have a panoramic view of Casentino Valley with the magnificent Castle of Poppi as a backdrop. The castles of Romena and Papiano can be seen soon after.
  • Just before the village of Borgo Alla Collina make a right  following the signs to Castel San Niccolo’/ Strada in Casentino /Montemignaio.  Within minutes you will see high up on the hill to the left, the beautiful  Castle of San Niccolo’ ( notice the unusual 6 hour clock face).
  • Drive through the village following the signs for Montemignaio/Firenze,  and continue for 5 km through the villages of Rifiglio andPagliericcio .
  • Take the first right signed Vertelli.
  • The single track road will take you to our “Magic Bridge” and our stunning “Anfiteatro Naturale”  and very soon, as you climb, you will see the hamlet of Vertelli.
  • Follow the single track road with care ( sound your horn at the blind bends) and cross over the stream.  Climb upwards and negotiate the very sharp hairpin bend (first gear).
  • Climb up through the olive groves and the house is the first driveway to the left after the river before the hamlet – there is a large stone sign facing you which says ‘DeiMori – La Massa’.
  • Ring the bell at the gate and we will open them for you.
  • Proceed up the drive, round the bend at the top and you will have arrived at DeiMori La Massa.

If you have a satellite navigator:

If Navigating by traditional methods:

  • Follow major road signs to Arezzo.
  • Follow signs for Bibbiena and Stia,
  • Pass by Bibbiena and continue following signs for Poppi and Stia.
  • Shortly after the small town of Ponte Poppi, you come to a roundabout, take the second exit off and continue, following signs for Firenze.
  • Shortly after crossing the River Arno, the road climbs and you will see a left turn signed Castel San Niccolo’/ Strada in Casentino /Montemignaio.  Take this road and Within minutes you will soon see high up on the hill to the left, the beautiful  Castle of San Niccolo’ ( notice the unusual 6 hour clock face).
